Chapter 1
Silver Stick Tournament Highlights
Emily
Alright, welcome back to This Week in Blue & White, everyone. This week is basically all about the Silver Stick — and what a marathon of hockey it was. I mean, four round-robin games packed in, quick turnarounds, and just so many chances to see how these kids stacked up against some of the best.
PT
Yeah, Emily, Silver Stick’s always one of those tournaments where, well, it kind of reveals who you are as a team. You get those short windows between games, barely enough time to eat and reset, and the competition? Tough. No freebies at all. We got four round-robin games—every single one mattered. You see who steps up, who grits it out, and honestly, who can stick to good habits when things get chaotic.
Emily
And honestly, from the drop of the puck, you could see the growth. There was this, like, energy even on defense, not just the highlight-reel goals. They handled the momentum swings better than I've seen in a while. Four games, four wins—so much of it came down to, what, PT? Depth?
PT
Absolutely, yeah. It wasn’t just one or two kids dragging us across the finish line. We had guys stepping up every game, goalies making those key stops when—sometimes, maybe we got a little too loose. Everybody stuck to their roles, especially as things got tighter. That group commitment really shone through—like, nobody tried to do it alone. The right way, from start to finish.
Chapter 2
Standout Performances and Game Recaps
Emily
Okay, so let's dig into how they actually got there, game by game. That first one against Upper Canada College—it was a 5–2 win, but kinda slow at first, right?
PT
Oh yeah, we definitely had a sluggish first period. But once the team woke up, it was all systems go. Challenger popped in two, and then Lamming, Birch, and Hutchinson added more. Young had some key saves early, which bought us some breathing room till the boys found their legs.
Emily
Game two, I remember this one—it was like, just pure offense. Honestly, the 8–4 win over Elgin Middlesex was almost hard to keep up with. I was scribbling down goals nonstop.
PT
That’s right, Challenger went full beast mode—hat trick. Then you had Longo, Heine, Mancino, Hanson, and Ryan all finding the net. It wasn’t just one line, it was everybody chipping in. The kind of balanced attack that’s tough to defend.
Emily
I feel like Game three vs Anaheim might be my favorite—6–1, just total control. I mean, it was relentless, especially the forecheck from Duke and George. But what really stood out to you?
PT
Lamming putting up two goals was big, and then, yeah, Mancino, Hutchinson, Heine, and Zettas all hit the board. And I think we outshot them something like 34–11. That’s the kind of game where you see all the pieces fitting together. The pressure, the puck movement—it was, uh, textbook.
Emily
And then closing out the round robin with that 6–1 win over Chicago Reapers... Heine with two, and a bunch of different scorers again. Leung and Longo with those assists, and Heath making the saves. Every line, every D pair, just, like, contributing.
PT
Yeah, the depth was real. And that set us up, mentally and, you know, just confidence-wise, for the quarterfinal—against York Simcoe Express. That was, honestly, the best two-way game all weekend and possibly all season. Start to finish, high tempo, sticking to the system—ended 7–1, and I think we had 54 shots?
Emily
Yeah, and they went 3-for-4 on the power play, too. And, okay, Mancino had the hatty—three goals—and Challenger with four assists. Zettas notched four points. Longo—goal plus a pair of helpers. I mean, that’s not just one line getting hot, that’s a whole squad rolling.
PT
Exactly. That’s the kind of game you wish you could bottle up and drink before every elimination round. But then we hit the semi against Detroit Little Caesars—man, I’ve been in so many of those over the years, Emily, where it’s two top teams just pummeling each other. We lost 5–4, but put up 55 shots, won almost 60% of our faceoffs. And Detroit, you know, they’re the real deal—they went on to win the tournament.
Emily
Yeah, and even though it stings, I mean—there’s no shame in that one. That’s a measuring stick kind of game, right? You see where you stand, you take it personally, and it gives you a whole new goal to chase.
PT
Yeah, and, uh, I mean, I remember—this is, gosh, going back a decade, but we had a loss like that at Silver Stick, and that group used it as fuel all the way to the GTHL championship. Sometimes those near-misses are what pull a good team into greatness.
Chapter 3
Lessons Learned and Growth
Emily
So, big picture, I think what shines through is how depth and resilience—they just keep showing up as the theme for this group. You lose a gutwrencher to Detroit, but, like, you helped set the standard for yourselves going forward. The d core battled hard even when missing Ryan.
PT
Yeah, I mean, the depth—like you said—guys like Zettas putting up four points in the quarterfinal, Heath making those timely stops, Challenger and Mancino being, you know, all over the score sheet... It wasn’t luck. It was structure, belief, and a willingness to battle when it—when it wasn't easy. Heine show heart of warrior playing through a banged up finger, these guys have fight.
Emily
And to me the coolest part is, like, they didn’t shy away when Detroit punched back. That semifinal pushed everyone, set a new benchmark. It’s not always the trophy that shows progress, sometimes it’s how you respond when it gets hard. Like we talked about after the Holiday Classic—that resilience, that trust in their structure, it’s still showing up.
PT
For sure. Every time these kids get tested—doesn’t matter if it’s a big win or a tough loss—you see a little more belief. That’s what’s gonna carry this group down the stretch, and, hey, by the time playoffs come, losses like this weekend? They don’t hurt, they build something.
Emily
Alright, that’s gonna be it for our Silver Stick recap. PT, always a treat breaking it all down with you.
PT
You too, Emily. Thanks everyone for tuning in to This Week in Blue & White—don’t miss next week, we’ll have even more as the season heats up. Emily, see you then!
Emily
Can’t wait. Bye everyone!
