Chapter 1

Holiday Classic Championship Recap

Emily

Hey everyone, welcome back to This Week in Blue & White – the official podcast of the Toronto Marlboros U15 team. I’m Emily, and if you’re looking for a story about dominance, resilience, and championship habits, you’re in the right place today. Because, yeah, the Marlboros are back-to-back Holiday Classic champs. It’s kind of wild, PT, how this team just keeps setting the bar.

PT

Seven games. Seven wins. And, get this: zero losses. I mean, it’s tough enough to win one of these tournaments, but to defend the title—especially with this much pressure, with everyone circling your name on their schedule—that really shows what this group is made of. It’s that standard we talk about all the time.

Emily

Yeah, and, like, the Holiday Classic is no joke. You’ve got top teams, tough schedules, you’re playing basically all day, every day, with almost no margin for mistakes. It’s not an environment where you can just cruise through, especially with that target on your back from being defending champs.

PT

I mean, that’s the thing, right? Whenever you’re coming in as last year’s champ, every other team throws their best at you. They’re circling your name in the dressing room. This group—our boys—they didn’t shy away from that at all. They kinda just leaned right into it, embraced the whole challenge.

Emily

Let’s get into how it actually played out, because, honestly, every game felt like a little statement. So first up: 8-0 over Markham. That’s a message loud and clear. From puck drop to final whistle, it was, like, “We’re here, try to stop us.”

PT

And they didn’t stop there. Game two, right after, you’re thinking, “Okay, maybe there’s a bit of a letdown?” Not at all. The boys deliver a 4-1 win over Waterloo. Super structured, disciplined, didn’t chase or get up tight with a lead—you know, the kind of stuff you want to see as the games get tougher.

Emily

For sure, and the offense was just kind of clicking game after game. They put up eight on Indiana Elite—8–3. That’s, like, three games in, and they’re still just rolling.

PT

And then round robin wraps up against Philly Jr Flyers. You could see the composure there. They win 5–1, but it wasn’t just about the score. They looked in control, didn’t take unnecessary risks, just played the way you need to if you wanna go deep.

Emily

And, so, we hit playoff time—quarterfinals, and it’s, what, a rematch with Philly? I honestly thought the Flyers might make things tighter, but nope. The Marlboros just locked it down completely. A 5–0 shutout. They controlled possession, barely let Philly have a sniff in the dangerous areas, just set the tone for what was coming.

PT

Yeah for sure, that was one of those games where I’m watching from the bench going, “If they keep playing like this, we’ll be tough to beat.” Semifinals are never easy, though. North York Rangers on the other side—they’re always feisty, know what I mean? But our guys just kept being patient, stuck with structure, didn’t cheat to make things happen.

Emily

And it paid off — 4–1 final, straight into the championship game. That ticket to the final was kind of punched with, I dunno, a really steady performance. All business.

PT

But then, the final. Against Peterborough Petes. And here’s where it got really interesting — these are the games that test literally everything you’ve been working on all year. We go down 4–1, and honestly, most teams would start to panic at that point, maybe get away from their identity. Not this group, though. They never blinked, didn’t get rattled. It’s that thing we keep circling back to; we’ve mentioned it in past episodes, too — resilience. They just trust each other, trust the structure.

Emily

Five unanswered goals. That’s all you need to say, honestly. The comeback was wild — 6–4 win, another Holiday Classic championship. It’s such a statement about who these kids are, how they play as a team, right?

PT

Yeah, absolutely. Seven wins, zero losses. I mean, champions again. I know we always say “trust the habits” and all that stuff, but these habits? They’re showing up in the games that really matter, under pressure. There’s a reason we talk about this group the way we do.

Emily

No doubt. Honestly, I’m fired up just thinking about what’s next for this team. So, we’ll leave it here for today, but there’s a lot more Marlboros hockey to come. Thank you for hanging out with us on This Week in Blue & White. PT, always great to do this with you.

PT

Likewise, Emily. And thanks to all our listeners for following the ride. We’ll catch you next time!

Emily

See ya, everyone!
